International Day of Epidemic Preparedness, observed annually on 27 December, highlights the importance of strengthening the capacity of health systems and communities to prevent, detect and respond to infectious disease outbreaks.
The observance was established by the United Nations to raise awareness of the need for international cooperation and preparedness in the face of epidemics and other public health emergencies.
Effective preparedness relies on areas such as surveillance, early detection, scientific research, healthcare capacity, communication and coordination between countries and institutions.
The day provides an opportunity to recognise the importance of learning from previous outbreaks and strengthening collaboration to help protect populations and reduce the impact of future epidemics.
